This Tropical Leaf design is a large prints, about 12″ for a group of 4 leaves

and spaced so it is almost an allover design.  It is directional.

PRINTED VS. WOVEN PLAID FABRICS

Have you ever purchased a plaid fabric and discovered it was printed crooked on the fabric?  This happens with stripes both vertically and horizontally.  The good news is sometimes it is possible to straighten the print with the grainline. 

PRINTED PLAID FABRIC

A PRINTED design is exactly that, printed onto the fabric.  You can tell your fabric is printed if one side has more color than the other.  If the back is very light or the design doesn’t show at all it is printed on, not woven.  Most of your flannel prints and quilting fabrics are printed, not woven.  Hopefully when the fabric is printed it is fed evenly so it is straight from selvedge to selvedge.  What is a selvedge?  That is the finished edge you find on your fabric, it runs parallel with the bolt the fabric is rolled on.  The print may have been done straight, but then when the fabric is rolled onto the cardboard bolt it is pulled off grain a little.  If this is the case it is possible to straighten the print. 

 STRAIGHTENING FABRIC GRAINLINE OR PRINTED FABRIC

How many of you remember this technic from jr. high or high school Home Ec. or 4-H sewing?  I realize I am probably dating myself to some degree by asking this question.  Let me attempt to describe the technic to you, if you don’t know how to do this.     Get a helper, then each of you take an opposite corner (diagonally) and GENTLY pull the fabric.  Do this a small amount or a little more depending on the amount it is off grain.  Stop and check the design to see if it is straight.  Lay your fabric down and fold it along the original fold.  If it lays without wrinkles at the fold and even on the selvedge you are finished.  If not, continue pulling gently on the diagonal until it does lay without wrinkles. 

This is the same technic used to straighten the grainline on any woven fabric.

WOVEN PLAID FABRIC

If your fabric is a woven plaid or stripe, or another design the yarns have been dyed and then woven to create the chosen design.  The way to determine if your fabric is woven is to see if both sides of the fabric look the same in color intensity.  If so, it is woven.  The method described above to straighten your fabric is used in this case as well if the woven fabric has been pulled off grain on the bolt. 

There is nothing wrong with either type of fabric, the use you are intending it for is the determining factor.  If you do not need a design to appear straight on the fabric you will have no problems with any print you select.   

When I select the fabrics we sell at www.flannels4baby.com I try to be sure you won’t have a problem with a design that is too off grain to be used.  The plaids, stripes and horizontally printed designs are just that, PRINTED.  They may not appear straight when used and definitely in some cases are not meant to, as in the wavy check prints we have from Alpine Fabrics or the Blue and Pink plaids from Baum Textiles.  They still make great blankets or pjs, or whatever you have selected them for.

BAUM CUBBY BEAR FLANNEL PRINTS 2008 COLLECTION

My Little Bunny

has the complete line for 2008 from Baum Textiles Cubby Bear FLANNELS.  This little bunny print is on a medium, almost lavender looking pink background with touches of orange, lavender, and fushia. 

If you are a fan of BEARS there are 2 new prints of brown bears on blue or pink.  Also we have COWS, LAMBS AND DOGS.

The baby print with the cows is #27886 and in light blue and light sage with cows in brown and white on a white background.

The Lamb print #27888 has white lambs on pink squares and gold behind small acorns. 

Those of you who like brighter colors for your baby flannel will like the new Dinosaur print #28370.  It has green, blue and yellow on it.  A new Barnyard Print has a bright yellow back-ground with barns and farm animals displayed on it.  This is #28372.
